Abstract

Chengdu -- the capital of Sichuan Province -- has experienced rapid development in recent years and, as a nationally designated transportation gateway to western China, is likely to see continued development. This seminar reports on work-in-progress (jointly conducted with Prof. Carlos Wing-Hung Lo, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Wang Rui, Harvard University) about the connections among the city's overall urban development planning, the ongoing development of its highway and mass transit systems, and efforts to reduce urban air pollution from transportation sources. The seminar will sketch out the current institutional practices and politics of city planning and transportation management; explore the implications of this process for enhancing the regulation of motor vehicle emissions; and indicate still-unanswered questions that our research hopes to address.
